Interventional Radiologist, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Seth J. Berkowitz, M.D., is a faculty member of the BIDMC Division of Clinical Informatics, an interventional radiologist, and the Medical Director of Radiology Informatics in the Department of Radiology at BIDMC. As the Medical Director of Radiology Informatics, Dr. Berkowitz provides physician input to guide the implementation and enhancement of the PACS, RIS, enterprise viewer, post-processing, and reporting tools in the Department of Radiology. He is actively incorporating artificial intelligence into the radiologist’s workflow. Dr. Berkowitz is interested in how software facilitates communication between clinicians, providers, and patients. He develops mobile and web applications that empower patients to make informed healthcare decisions guided by data. Dr. Berkowitz also builds tools that connect physicians with data to improve efficiency, reduce variability, and recommend better treatment decisions. His applications, used in production at BIDMC, enable bedside image viewing (eyeRad), facilitate radiology education (RadViewer), securely capture patient photographs (PhotoConsult), and enhance radiologist communication (Multimedia Report). He leads a multidisciplinary effort to build and deploy BIDMC HomeLink. This remote monitoring telemedicine application leverages IOT sensors and FHIR APIs to the BIDMC EHR to engage patients in their health care and extend the continuity of care beyond the bounds of the hospital and physicians’ offices.
